What is a hostel?
A hostel is what you make it to be!

'Hostel' defined
The dictionary definition...
A hostel is a low-cost shared accommodation option often used by travellers and students. In a hostel you usually have different shared dormitories ranging from a 2 bed to an 18 bed with a shared use of a kitchen and other common areas. Rooms can be mixed or single sex with private or shared bathrooms. Many hostels now a days offer female only dorms to help guests feel comfortable.
The REAL definition...
A hostel is what you make it to be! You will find that there’s different types of hostels for you to choose from. A party hostel will be a completely different vibe to alcohol-free/dry hostel. It can be difficult picking between all the options, but it’s completely up to you how you want your stay to go. With a party hostel you can expect late nights and snoring roommates, whereas a dry hostel will likely have a more chilled “hostel fam” vibe and be a lot more laidback.
Types of rooms and beds
In a hostel you will find an array of different bed types and dormitories. But which one should you choose?
I found as a 25-year-old solo traveller, who likes her sleep, a 6-bed dorm is my preference. In a 6-bed there are enough people to socialise and make friends but not too many that you will likely get a snorer or someone not following the hostel “etiquette”.
For the shoestring backpacker, anything higher than a 6-bed is the way to go! You can save some money in your budget by going for the cheaper option but be warned - there’s a higher chance to get a snorer or people coming in late/ early hours of the morning.
For the more bougee backpacker, who needs their 8 hours of rest, many hostels offer private or smaller dorms. This likely will be more expensive and impact the budget more, but worth it if you’re not working on a strict budget but still want to meet people.
All hostels should come with some sort of locker/ luggage storage, but not all come already with a padlock. It’s a good idea to carry your own – just in case!
